Some days were just meant to take slowly, one relaxing activity at a time. For our residents, their favorite days might just be where they sat at a table, with a paintbrush, a puzzle piece, or a headset that takes them somewhere new, at least virtually.
Virtual Reality Destination Days
Residents strapped on VR headsets and traveled without ever leaving their chairs. We even had one resident whose badge stated that she’d been to the Netherlands that day, all the while being safely enclosed within Fort Tryon. Watching someone’s face light up mid headset, laughing or gasping at something only they can see, is its own kind of entertainment.
Nail Session
Manicures turned into a full afternoon of pampering, with hands out on the table, polish going on one nail at a time, and small gems and designs added for anyone who wanted a little extra flair. Residents held their hands up proudly for photos when it was done.
Doll Therapy
For some residents, a comfort doll brings a kind of calm that’s hard to put into words. A gentle rock, a soft conversation, a moment of quiet connection that doesn’t need an audience to matter.
Water Painting
Watercolors came out and residents worked page by page, some carefully outlining shapes, others letting the color do whatever it wanted. There’s no wrong way to paint, and that freedom showed in every finished page.
Puzzle Challenge
Puzzle pieces spread across the tables, residents sorting edges from middles, working alone or leaning over to help a neighbor find the right piece. Slow, steady, and satisfying every time a piece clicked into place.
